The last time Athletic trained at Lezama was on 13 March. When the players left they had no idea it would be 55 days before they would return. After nearly two months of isolation the squad reported back to the club facilities on Thursday to undergo Covid-19 testing ahead of eventually returning to training and resuming the season.

Starting a little after 8 a.m. the players arrived for their tests staggered while also following the medical guidelines required which included wearing gloves and a mask. Once checked in, each player underwent a blood test to check for the presence of antibodies as well as a nasal swap to determine whether anyone is currently sick. “It was unpleasant,” said midfielder Mikel San José when asked about the notoriously long nasal swabs.

A total of 29 players underwent testing along with coaches Gaizka Garitano, Patxi Ferreira, Juan Iribarren, and Aitor Iru. Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta was also present and all staff who will be needed for training session also completed the screening. “Everything went well,” said Iñaki Williams. “I’m eager to return to the field.” Players also underwent physical examinations at the IMQ Colón Medical Center in Bilbao.

The results of the tests will be available after 48 hours and, barring unforeseen illnesses, the players will begin training individually at Lezama early next week. In time, permission will be given for small groups to train together followed by the entire team. La Liga aims to resume games by the middle of June.
