Vitoria Mayor Appeals For Copa Del Rey Final To Be Moved To Mendizorrotza

UEFA have put Athletic and Real Sociedad in a very difficult position. The clubs can either choose to play the Copa del Rey final this season behind closed doors with the winner earning European qualification, or postpone it until next year when fans can attend but without the reward of Europe.

Both clubs have earnestly defended the idea that the final shouldn’t take place without fans and supporters have come out in masses to defend that position. However, there’s still a chance that the final will be played this season. If that happens, traveling all the way to an empty La Cartuja in Seville makes little sense.

The Spanish Football Federation have maintained that the final will be held at La Cartuja as planned, but recent reports suggest that Mendizorrotza has emerged as a possible option to host the game if fans can’t attend. Both clubs are said to be in favor of relocating the final closer to avoid having to travel.

Deportivo Alavés, who call Mendizorrotza home, have no issue with the stadium hosting the Cup final, nor does the mayor of Vitoria, Gorka Urtaran, who recently took to social media to appeal for the game to be moved. “This unprecedented Cup final should be played in the presence of the Basque fans,” he said on Twitter. “But if it is to be played behind closed doors, Estadio Mendizorrotza is the best alternative to play it.”

If the decision is made to play the final this season without fans then relocating it to Mendizorrotza would be ideal. In addition to being located in the capital of the Basque Country, the stadium is only a short distance from Bilbao and Donosti and the heat would be far more bearable in the summer than Seville. The Spanish Football Federation will have the final say, but the clubs would welcome the move.
