Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic La Liga has been determined to resume play and finish the season. Over the past weeks plans have been in the works for teams to return to training on early May, but everything was reliant on whether or not the government would allow players to report to club facilities. On Tuesday, an answer was finally given.

Speaking to the public, Spain Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez officially announced that professional athletes would be allowed to leave home for training. With permission now granted the league will follow strict guidelines to return to training which includes routine testing for all players, coaches, and staff.

Players will officially return to training on 4 May, although everyone will have to change and shower at home, and sessions will be done individually. By 11 May small groups will be allowed to train together and then the entire team on 26 May. As of now, La Liga plans to start playing matches behind closed doors on 7 or 14 June and have ensured that games won’t take place every 48 hours.

“I hope that La Liga can return in the middle of June,” league president Javier Tebas told Vamos. “At least we can finish the competition which is something very important.” Athletic have already made the necessary preparations to begin training again and will be ready for the players to return to Lezama on 4 May.

For the remainder of the season Athletic will play home games against Atlético Madrid, Real Betis, Mallorca, Real Madrid, Sevilla, and Leganés while traveling to face off with Eibar, Barcelona, Valencia, Levante, and Granada. The status of the Copa del Rey final is still unknown and the clubs and Spanish Football Federation have planned to wait until fans can attend the match, although UEFA have required all games be played if it all possible, even if it means behind closed doors.
