Ainhoa Tirapu has announced that she will retire at the end of the season (AC)

Ainhoa Tirapu is one of the greatest players to ever wear the Zurigorri shirt for Athletic Femenino. After signing with the club in 2005 the goalkeeper has gone on to make 358 appearances for the women’s team, winning two league titles and becoming captain. Tirapu has been a leader both on and off the pitch, representing the values of Athletic and fighting for the growth, respect, and equality of women’s football.

On Tuesday, Tirapu announced in a video shared by the club that she will retire from football at the end of the season following an illustrious 15 years with Athletic. In addition to her achievements with the club, Tirapu has featured with the Spanish National Team 46 times and is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in football.

“Today I come to thank you. I have grown as a person at Athletic. Every time I’ve put on this shirt I’ve given 100% and enjoyed it. I would have liked to say goodbye on the field, but I don’t know if the current situation will allow me to do that. We don’t know if our league will return or not, so I have decided to do it this way. From now on, I can only leave a gap for those who come from the academy so that they can enjoy Athletic as I have, so that they can give everything for this shirt. I will go, from now on, to the stands with you. I can only say: Thank you! and Aรบpa Athletic!”

Although Tirapu never lifted the Copa de la Reina during her career, Athletic Femenino have qualified for the Cup semifinal this season but the competition is in doubt due to the ongoing health crisis. Ainhoa Tirapu will hang up her gloves as an Athletic legend and has received overwhelming support and praise from teammates, current and former players, and fans since announcing her decision.

Ainhoa Tirapu’s autobiography, Bizitza Eskukadaka, is currently available and tells her first-hand story of her career which will now come to an end.
