Jon Morcillo’s goal is to continue at Athletic. Despite attracting interest from other clubs in Spain, as well as England, the 21-year-old isn’t interested in leaving Bilbao and is close to signing a new contract with the Zurigorri. The two sides have been holding negotiations for several weeks and a deal is close to being finalized.

In truth, Morcillo’s can be described as a late boomer. After being developed by Amorebieta and Cultural Durango, the winger was signed to CD Basconia in 2016 where he played well, but was never the most outstanding. Morcillo spent last season on loan in the Segunda B but has exploded this year at Bilbao Athletic under the leadership of Joseba Etxeberria.

Morcillo leads the team with 10 goals this season, along with 6 assists, and has been one of the key players in a team hopeful of winning the promotional playoffs. Although his contract is set to expire at the end of the campaign there is a clause that would allow Athletic to automatically renew his deal for an addition year by promoting him to the first team. However, the club would prefer to sign Morcillo to a new contract similar to what happened with Gaizka Larrazabal last summer.

According to a report from Javier Beltrán of El Correo, a renewal will be relatively simple with both Athletic and Morcillo eager to get the deal done. The promising forward has already trained with the first team on multiple occasions and will spend the upcoming preseason with Garitano’s squad.

By signing a new contract Morcillo will be promoted to the first team and will likely spend next season on loan in the Segunda to continue developing. After what has been an immensely impressive campaign with Bilbao Athletic, Jon Morcillo has shown that he has the potential to play at San Mamés one day and is determined to make that dream a reality.
