Xabi Etxeita In Favor Of Postponing The Copa Del Rey Final Until Fans Can Attend
Xabi Etxeita has found a new home since leaving Athletic. After making 140 appearances over 7 seasons at San Mamés the defender now wears the Getafe shirt and has become a pivotal player in José Bordalás’s team. Even though he’s no longer player football at San Mamés the 32-year-old still supports the club and is eagerly looking forward to the upcoming Copa del Rey final.
While the La Liga season is expected to return at some point, albeit behind closed doors, the Cup final will not take place until fans are able to safely attend. This almost certainly means that the match won’t happen until next season which Etxeita fully supports.
“For me it would be a disappointment to play the final without an audience. Seeing such a beautiful final, so longed for by many Basques, without fans in the stands would be tough. From my point of view it should be delayed as long as necessary to be able to play it with fans. It’s a historic final and if you have to play it next year because this year you can’t put people in the stands then let them play next year.”
Speaking with RTVE, Etxeita also voiced his frustrations over Covid-19 tests being made available to players in preparation for teams returning to training. With such a short supply and many people needing tests, the defender revealed that Getafe players have refused to be tested until there is a far less demand for those at higher risk.
