Lezama is full of talented young players who could one day take the field at San Mamés, but some show more promise than others. At the moment, no one has flashed as much potential as Nico Serrano who has been in sensational form with the Juvenil A team. The 17-year-old leads the team with 14 goals in 19 appearances and has been a key player for the Spain U17 side as well.

On Wednesday the teenager answered questions on his Instagram page and made his goals clear. “Debuting in the Primera with Athletic is my dream, it would be the greatest thing there is,” he said. Serrano will be one step closer to reaching the first team next year when he’s promoted to CD Basconia, or possibly even Bilbao Athletic.

Youth football has been canceled for the rest of the season due to the current health crisis which is necessary, but also unfortunate for the players. “We had the U17 European championships and they canceled it,” said Serrano. “I was super happy the first time I was called to the Spanish team. I was proud, it was a dream since childhood.”

There’s still hope that the La Liga season will resume at some point but Serrano points out that the stoppage happened at a pivotal time for the first team. “The break came when Athletic were doing very well in the league. Very good things were coming.”

Serrano’s move to Athletic from Villarreal two years ago came as no surprise as the Basques had been monitoring the young winger closely. Looking back, Serrano explained that his initial switch from Osasuna to Villarreal wasn’t easy. “It was difficult because I left when I was 12 years old and only saw my parents one a month, but that helped me value things and was a good experience. I will always be grateful.”

At one point Serrano was also asked to name his favorite team and player from different leagues. “Athletic and Messi,” he answered for La Liga. “Manchester City and Agüero, Bayern and Sancho, Juventus and CR7, and PSG and Neymar.”

It comes as no surprise that other clubs have been monitoring Serrano given his incredible performances, however the starlet is committed to reaching the Athletic first team. Nico Serrano currently has a €30 million release clause in his contract with the Zurigorri and may only be a few years away from taking his first step onto the grass at San Mamés.
