Ibai Gómez “I’m Convinced That We Will Take Out La Gabarra For Sure”
Athletic’s path to the Copa del Rey final was marked by trials and tribulations. The Lions had to win two penalty shootouts, overcome an early red card, defeat Barcelona, and score a late goal on the road against Granada to advance to the final. No matter the challenge, the Basques managed to prevail and Ibai Gómez believes they are destined to lift the title.
“This year has been stressful for the fans and for us,” Gómez said during an interview with DAZN. “Seeing that we have passed each round in an incredible way, because of what we have done, I’m convinced that we will take out La Gabarra for sure.”
Yuri Berchiche’s goal against Granada was arguably the biggest of the season, but the header that Iñaki Williams scored to defeat Barcelona was also massive. Gómez remarked that the Lions went into the match confident that they could topple the giants.
“My hair still stands on end because it was incredible. It was everyone’s celebrations, it was everything. We faced that match with all the hope in the world to be able to pass. We knew how difficult it would be. Playing qualifying rounds against teams like Barça, Real Madrid, and Atlético is very complication, but we were convinced that in a match at San Mamés we could do it and we did.”
In light of the final being postponed due to the current health crisis, Gómez admitted that it will be even more special when it does take place.
“The format is beautiful and luck has been on our side. Advancing the way we did in each round has rarely been seen in history so it would be a very, very special way to end the year by celebrating two things: the title and having overcome this situation that we are experiencing.”
While there is still no date for when the Cup final will take place, both clubs are determined to wait until it’s safe for fans to attend the historic match. It’s been 36 years since Athletic last lifted the Copa del Rey title and fans are eager to see it happen again once football returns.
