Proposed Plans For Ending The Season Include Bilbao Athletic And Basconia Competing In Promotional Playoffs
Football will return, but when and how are uncertain. As La Liga works on plans to resume the campaign the lower levels are still unsure as to what will happen. For Athletic, the fates of Bilbao Athletic and CD Basconia are still to be decided, although a possible plan has given hope for an exciting finish.
On Tuesday the Spanish Football Federation announced that president Luis Rubiales has been in contact with the territorial federations to provide a plan for how to handle the remainder of the season. If approved, the campaigns would end without anyone being relegated but there would still be promotional playoffs for those qualifying which would be held in a single elimination format.
This plan would greatly benefit both Bilbao Athletic and Basconia who are currently in the promotional playoff zone of the Segunda B and Tercera respectively. The two teams have enjoyed very successful seasons to this point and having the opportunity to compete for promotion would be well-deserved. It would be the first time in 17 years that both compete for promotion at the same time. However, the pair cannot play in the same division meaning Bilbao Athletic would have to earn promotion for Basconia to move up as well.
