Athletic’s Trip To Boise Postponed Until Next Summer And Could Include A Preseason Tour Of North America
Athletic trip to Boise, Idaho must wait. The club was planning to attend the Jaialdi Festival, an event held every five years to celebrate the Basque Diaspora, in late July but the Covid-19 pandemic will prevent that from happening. Jaialdi 2020 has officially been postponed until next summer, although having an extra year to prepare could result in an even more extravagant trip for the Zurigorri.
As long as European schedules permitted, Athletic and Real Sociedad were in talks with the organizers of the festival to travel to Boise and play a friendly against each other. With both sides advancing to the Copa del Rey final the chances of having the two historic clubs meet in Boise for a friendly was seen as a real possibility. Now the goal is to make that happen next summer instead.
According to a report from Juanma Velasco of Marca, the postponement significantly increases the chances that both Athletic and Real Sociedad will be able to travel to Boise next summer. In addition to the friendly, Athletic are now considering a preseason tour of the United States and Mexico with the Women’s team possibly making the trip as well. President Aitor Elizegi has long championed the idea of the club visiting Basques of the Diaspora and next year could see that take place on a grand scale.
