Arsenal Reportedly Renew Interest In Signing Athletic’s Unai Núñez

Unai Núñez has yet to sign a new contract with Athletic (AC)

The future of Unai Núñez remains a mystery. Despite being given more consistent playing time since January the center-back has yet to agree to a new contract with Athletic and is weighing up a summer exit. Although it’s always been Núñez’s dream to play for the Lions, his general lack of opportunities at San Mamés has grown increasingly frustrating.

Bayern Munich have continued to show the most interest in signing the 23-year-old and even considered making a move during the winter market. However, the Germans eventually chose to wait until the summer with Núñez deciding not to leave Athletic despite having offers. Other clubs such as West Ham, Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Everton, and Arsenal have all been linked with the Lezama product as well.

With the football season currently in a state of uncertainty many clubs are already starting to plan for the future. According to an exclusive report from DEIA, Arsenal have renewed their interest in Núñez with manager Mikel Arteta said to have identified the center-back as a top target to bolster the back line.

Núñez is still under contract through 2023, but his €30 million release clause and massive potential make him a prize in today’s market. In the end, the choice to leave or stay will be his to make. Athletic president Aitor Elizegi recently confirmed that the club has submitted a third renewal offer that would extend his deal through 2025 while also significantly raising his wages and release clause. “What I want is to continue playing and improving,” Núñez recently answered when asked about his future.
