Athletic Lead The Race To Sign Javi Martinez
Athletic Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta has been rather cryptic when discussing the club’s possible summer transfer plans. The former defender has routinely refused to talk about potential targets, although it’s no secret that Athletic are very interested in bringing Javi Martinez back to the club with Alkorta and Gaizka Garitano both keen on the 31-year-old. Despite the changes at Bayern Munich this season the 31-year-old will be available at the end of the campaign.
According to a report from Sky Sports Germany, Bayern Munich have already made the decision to part with Martinez this summer and two clubs are currently in the running to sign the midfielder. Athletic are said to have maintained contact over the past few months and are in poll position to sign Martinez. However, Getafe are also vying for the veteran’s signature.
Getafe’s hopes of securing a transfer heavily depend on whether or not José Bordalás leads the team to the Champions League. Even then, Athletic are in a strong position due to Martinez’s love for his former club. “Bilbao is a paradise,” he said in an interview late last year. “I can’t say that I will never return. I could never say no to Athletic.”
The current coronavirus pandemic has cast football into doubt and uncertainty. If the season is able to be finished it would likely run into the summer which could alter the transfer window and the ability for clubs to make signings. For now, Athletic are in a very strong position financially and plan to do everything possible to bring Javi Martinez back to San Mamés.
