Aitor Fernandéz Downplays Interest From Athletic Club
All signs point to Iago Herrerín leaving Athletic in the summer. The 32-year-old is unhappy with his minutes at San Mamés and has even revealed that he already has offers from other clubs. While things can always change, Athletic are already preparing for life without the goalkeeper and are said to have identified the top choice to replace Herrerín.
Earlier today SER Valencia reported that Athletic were interested in signing Levante’s Aitor Fernandéz in the upcoming transfer window. Fernandéz is a product of Lezama and was highly touted, though he never had a path to the first team. Since joining Levante in 2018 the 28-year-old has become one of La Liga’s best goalkeepers and would be an impressive signing for Athletic.
Not long after the report, Fernandéz was a guest on Radio Marca where he was asked to respond to the story. “I have a contract until 2023 and I’m happy here,” he said. “When you have a good season, and the previous one was also good, it’s normal that it has an impact. I’m focused on Levante and I’m training for when we return so that I can be at my best in the last matches.”
Returning to Athletic would be special for Fernandéz, but his chances of playing regular minutes would be slim. Unai Simón is without question the starter for the Lions and Fernandéz would likely only see the field as the Cup goalkeeper. Aitor Fernandéz’s current release clause is set at €30 million and other clubs such as Real Sociedad and Real Betis are also said to be interested in a move.
