Athletic Cancel Training As Spain Announces Nationwide Lockdown

The return of football is in limbo following Spain’s lockdown (AC)

Athletic held the last training session at Lezama on Friday with temporary plans to return on Tuesday. That won’t be happening. With over 1,500 new confirmed cases of Coronavirus in the country in one day, Spain has announced a nationwide lockdown that will last for at least 15 days and could be extended based on the evolution of the situation.

At the earliest Athletic could return to training on 30 March, but looking that far ahead is a serious challenge with the situation constantly changing. For now, La Liga has suspended the next two weeks of matches with hopes of being able to resume the season. This too may last even longer and Athletic have already provided players with training plans to follow at home to stay in shape for when the stoppage is over.

There is growing fear that the season may have to be canceled as the outbreak continues to increase throughout Europe. Athletic, and football, must wait as public health is the top priority in this unprecedented situation.
