Jon Morcillo And Unai Vencedor Train With The First Team
The La Liga season has been suspended for at least two weeks but Athletic will continue training at Lezama in closed sessions. For now the men’s and women’s first teams along with Bilbao Athletic will continue training behind closed doors while all sessions for youth teams and CD Bilbao have been canceled. Athletic may not know when they will take the field again but Gaizka Garitano is working to make sure the squad is ready.
Having such a long gap without matches can be a really good thing for the team. Players like Ander Capa, Yeray, Iñigo Martinez, Yuri Berchiche, Raúl García, Dani García, Iker Muniain, and Iñaki Williams have all played heavy minutes and some are even carrying slight injuries. The time off will allow for some much-needed recovery.
At the same time, it will also give Garitano the opportunity to reinforce things that have worked well recently while also addressing weak points that have been exploited. On Thursday, Jon Morcillo and Unai Vencedor were both called up to train with the first team which could be a regular occurrence for Bilbao Athletic players during the stoppage.
Along with the league campaign coming to a halt, Athletic are also unsure when the Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad will be played. The two clubs and Spanish Football Federation have all agreed to postpone the final until a later date but with the Coronavirus outbreak continuing to grow there’s currently no way to plan for future matches. For now, the Cup final is in limbo.
