Unai López “It’s Always Special To Score With This Shirt”
Unai López scored the first goal of his Athletic career on Sunday, beating the goalkeeper with a free kick in the team’s 4-1 win over Real Valladolid. The midfielder had been out of the lineup for a few weeks before being named to the starting lineup and took full advantage of the opportunity at Estadio José Zorilla.
“It’s always special to score with this shirt,” López told AthleticTV after the match. “It’s been a very important game for me and for the team. This is football, for good and for bad. Now we have two wins in the league and we’re going to go for the third.”
The win lifted Athletic to just five points off of the top seven and the Lions are determined to get back into the race for Europe. “We’re going to fight for the European positions and that’s what we’re doing,” said López. Winning the Copa del Rey would also qualify Athletic for the Europa League. “We have to go to win the Cup. I’m from Donosti, but I’m Athletic. I’m sure we can bring the Cup to Bilbao. It has everyone very excited.”
Following the wins over Villarreal and Real Valladolid, Athletic will try to pick up another three points next weekend when Atlético Madrid visit San Mamés. The team will have the entire week to prepare for the match with players like Unai López hoping to enjoy important minutes once again.
