Jon Sillero Included In The First Team Squad For Trip To Real Valladolid
Athletic will visit Estadio José Zorilla tomorrow for a big match against Real Valladolid in hopes of securing another important three points. Last weekend the Lions snapped a ten-game winless streak with a victory over Villarreal and the team is eager to build on the momentum. However, having just played the Cup semifinal second leg on Thursday night, fatigue could also be an issue for Gaizka Garitano’s side.
The manager acknowledged during his pregame press conference that there will be some changes to the lineup. With Ander Capa and Unai Núñez both suspended Garitano will have some big decisions to make. In light of the absences, Bilbao Athletic captain Jon Sillero has been called up to the squad for the first time in his career.
Sillero grew up playing right-back but over the last few years has transitioned to center-back with Bilbao Athletic where he’s been a key player for the Kumeak. The 21-year-old provides coverage for both Capa and Núñez, though he could also feature as the right center-back were Garitano to field the 5-3-2 formation that’s been used heavily since January.
The chances of Sillero actually starting against Valladolid are low, but not impossible. Garitano is expected to field the traditional 4-2-3-1 with Capa and Núñez unavailable. Iñigo Lekue would start in place of Capa, though Sillero does give the manager other options at the back.
Having joined Lezama in 2008 Jon Sillero has spent his entire career with Athletic. The club has long viewed Sillero as a player who could one day play at San Mamés and after four years with Bilbao Athletic he may finally get the opportunity to make his first team debut this weekend.
