Bilbao Athletic only managed one point in a six-goal thriller against Real Unión (AC)

Bilbao Athletic were unable to snap a three-game winless streak on Saturday as the Kumeak only managed a draw against Real Unión at Lezama. Aside from Oihan Sancet and Jon Sillero, who were both called up to the first team, Joseba Etxeberria was able to field a very strong lineup in what proved to be a six-goal thriller.

It didn’t take long for Bilbao Athletic to open up the scoring. Just five minutes into the game Imanol García de Albéniz found Jon Morcillo at the far post for an easy goal to take an early 1-0 lead. Gorka Guruzeta would then double the lead for the Kumeak 15 minutes later, finishing off an assist from Juan Artola and taking all the momentum.

Coming out of the break Real Unión would take control with Eneko Eizmendi scoring a brace in ten-minutes to level the score. Asier Córdoba would eventually retake the lead for Bilbao Athletic with a shot directly from a throw-in but it wouldn’t hold. In the 80th minute Asier Etxaburu equalized with a header in the box to make it 3-3 with both sides taking one point away from the match.

The unfortunate string of results over the past few weeks have now seen Bilbao Athletic fall to 3rd in the table, although Cultural Leonesa only lead the Cachorros based on the head-to-head tiebreaker. Next Sunday the Kumeak will travel to 4th place Real Valladolid where three massive points will be at stake and could significantly impact the standings moving forward.
