An Estimated 40,000 Tickets For The Copa Del Rey Final Will Be Given To Athletic Club And Real Sociedad
Next month’s Copa del Rey final will be a celebration of Basque football with Athletic Club and Real Sociedad set to face off at La Cartuja in a historic Derby. The two sides have never met in the Cup final and fans are already ecstatic about what could very well be the biggest game in the history of the rivalry. With so much excitement surrounding the match, plans are already underway to ensure a fantastic night in Seville.
The Spanish Football Federation will meet with both clubs next week to map out the logistics and will be allotted tickets on 12 March to distribute to supporters. According to a report from Juanma Velasco of Marca, approximately 40,000 tickets will be split between Athletic and Real Sociedad and as many as 50,000 fans are expected to make the trip to La Cartuja for the match.
Spain’s National Police, as well as the Ertzaintza, the autonomous police force of the Basque Country, will be coordinating the security for the final and will soon meet to start preparing. The RFEF are already working to set aside a specific fan zone for each team, though there will be no restrictions on opposing fans intermingling which is a common occurrence in Basque football.
Interestingly, the Marca report also revealed that Real Sociedad could join Athletic in the trip to Boise, Idaho in the summer. The festival of Jaialdi, which celebrates the Basque Diaspora, will be held in Boise at the end of July and organizers are hopeful that both clubs will come to play a friendly. Plans are still in the early stages as Athletic and Real Sociedad must first finish the season before setting their respective summer agendas.
