Andoni Iraola “I Hope Athletic Can Lift The Cup”
Andoni Iraola’s hopes of reaching the Copa del Rey final came to an end last night as Real Sociedad won 1-0 at Anduva to eliminate Mirandés. It was an incredible run from the Segunda side with Iraola showing the world that he’s more than capable of coaching at the highest level. While Mirandés won’t play for the trophy next month, there’s still a chance that Iraola could be celebrating at the end of the final.
As one of the greatest players to ever wear the Athletic shirt, Iraola will be supporting the Lions tonight in the semifinal second leg against Granada. “Obviously, I’m from Athletic and I hope Athletic can lift the title,” Iraola told reporters after the loss to Real Sociedad.
Iraola wasn’t even two years old the last time Athletic won the Copa del Rey. Although he went to three Cup finals as a player, he was never able to help the team end the drought. If Athletic manage to eliminate Granada tonight the Zurigorri will meet Real Sociedad in the final at La Cartuja and Andoni Iraola dreams of seeing La Gabarra taken out in celebration.
