Iñaki Williams Reveals Athletic “Will Leave The Field” If Racially Abused Again
Racism continues to be a plague in football and Iñaki Williams has been subject to abuse on a number of occasions. Earlier this season, the 25-year-old endured taunts from Espanyol fans at RCDE Stadium and the outpouring of support in the following days was beautiful. With players and clubs starting to take a stand against racism Athletic are prepared to do the same.
“In the 21st century we shouldn’t allow this,” Williams said in an interview with Universo Valdano. “No matter the skin color, race, or sex no type of harassment should be allowed in football. I hope it doesn’t happen again, but if it does happen again I will have the support of many people like in Tenerife or how there were thousands of messages sent to me on social networks.”
Williams has always had the backing of his teammates and the group is ready to take an even bigger step in the fight against racism. “I know that my teammates would have left the field with me because we have talked about it,” said Williams. “If it happens to me again we will leave the field. If they give us a loss we won’t care, it would be a punch against racism.”
Leaving the field during a game would be a massive statement and Athletic’s stance shows how seriously the club is taking the issue. Racism has no place in football, or anywhere else, and Iñaki Williams is proud of his heritage as the son of refugee parents who fled to the Basque Country in search of a better life.
