Iñigo Córdoba “I’m Happy To Return To The Team And To Win Again”
Iñigo Córdoba returned to the lineup for the first time since December on Sunday as Athletic defeated Villarreal 1-0 at San Mamés. As usual, the winger’s work rate was outstanding and he linked up well with Yuri Berchiche to control the left side of the field. Athletic had lost just twice all season with Córdoba in the team and his inclusion helped end the winless streak in La Liga.
“I’m happy to return to the team and to win again,” Córdoba told Athletic TV after the match. “I’m grateful to the coach for his confidence in me. “We’re happy to stop the bad streak in La Liga here at San Mamés. Now we have our sights set on an exciting game on Thursday.”
Córdoba refused to comment on the questionable refereeing decisions which led to two penalties for Athletic and denied a third. “I haven’t seen the replays and I don’t know if the calls were correct or not,” he said. “The only thing I know is that the bad thing about VAR is that it hurts the continuity of the game. VAR is here to make the game more fair.”
While Iñigo Córdoba has often been criticized by fans, the 22-year-old brings important balance to the team when on the field. It remains to be seen whether or not he will be in the lineup in the Cup match against Granada, but the performance against Villarreal shows that Córdoba can be an important weapon for Athletic in the matches ahead.
