Iker Muniain “We’ve Received Less Than We Deserve”
Athletic’s 2-1 loss to Alavés on Sunday was a hard result to swallow. Not only did the Lions suffer a third straight Basque Derby defeat, but the team has now gone ten consecutive league games without a victory. Captain Iker Muniain spoke with reporters after the match and shared his frustrations over making multiple mistakes.
“It’s a tough blow. We were strong physically, but we’re leaving with nothing. We have to end the streak as soon as possible. We’ve received less than we deserve. With the new system we aren’t conceding many chances but we have to improve on set pieces. It’s a matter of concentration.”
Muniain explained that the Lions were prepared to deal with Alavés’ style of play but, in the end, it wasn’t enough. The hosts took advantage of their chances and took all three points.
“I saw the team well, especially in the first half. We generated a lot of chances with long balls to Williams. In the second half they generated almost nothing, but we know how the game ended. We haven’t defended well, although we had already talked about how Alavés creates danger from set pieces and counter attacks. We weren’t successful with our defending. ”
If not for Athletic’s run in the Copa del Rey the poor streak in La Liga would be even more concerning. The Zurigorri will have another chance to finally secure a victory on Sunday when they host Villarreal at San Mamés, though the Cup semifinal second leg will take place just days later.
