Sunday’s loss to Osasuna was a disappointing result for Athletic, but a magical night for Unai Vencedor. The 19-year-old made his first team debut, realizing his childhood dream, and played very well before being taken off in the second half. On Tuesday, Athletic released a special video on social media where Vencedor reflected on the game that he will never forget.

“I was very happy. I didn’t expect it but when my team, Bilbao Athletic, played on Saturday and I wasn’t called with them I thought that I could be in the first team. My debut was a unique experience which I had been dreaming of practically since I was born. Debuting at San Mamés, which is an impressive and incredible stadium, makes me very happy. My goal is to play many more games at San Mamés.”

Vencedor was allowed to take the free kicks for the team in his debut and nearly scored a goal when one of his efforts struck the crossbar. The starlet revealed that it was Raúl García who encouraged him to take the shot and that he felt supported by the entire team.

“Raúl García told me ‘take it, you take it’ and I just said to myself ‘ok, here I go’. With Iñigo Martínez and Williams I felt very supported and they helped me take it well. I knew it was going to go over the wall and that’s what happened, but it would have been amazing to debut with a goal.”

Vencedor’s excellent performance showed that he is ready for more chances with the first team and could have opportunities throughout the remainder of the season. This summer, Unai Vencedor is expected to be fully promoted, along with Oihan Sancet, and fight for an important role in the squad.
