Unai Vencedor “I’ve Been An Athletic Fan Since I Was Born And This Is A Dream Come True”
Unai Vencedor made his long-awaited first team debut on Sunday, being the named to the starting lineup in the Basque Derby against Osasuna. The 19-year-old played well and, along with hitting the post from a free kick, showed composure and poise on the ball. Unfortunately, Athletic lost the match 1-0 but it was a night that the midfielder will never forget.
“I’ve been an Athletic fan since I was born and this is a dream come true. I will always remember this match; the rhythm, a full San Mamés, a Basque Derby, and all my teammates. I have the happiness of debuting here and it’s something I’ve been dreaming of for years. It’s been incredible. Being a starter caught me by surprise. The coach asked me to play as I always do and to enjoy it. The result is the only thing not great about my debut, we didn’t deserve to lose.”
Moving forward, Vencedor hopes to have more opportunities with the first team. The starlet is expected to be promoted in the summer but could continue to be called on this season.
“The dream of every kid is to be here, but continuing with the first team depends on the coach. I’m ready for it and I will continue to fight for my place and working for when the coach needs me. Everyone congratulated me in the locker room and Sancet told me the take advantage of the opportunity and to enjoy it. Now I will look to see what the coach has to say.”
Along with Oihan Sancet and Gaizka Larrazabal, Unai Vencedor became the third youth player to debut with the first team this season. Vencedor’s impressive performance showed that he’s ready to fight for a place in the squad and he could be called up once again when Athletic travel to Alavés next weekend.
