Athletic Reportedly Interested In Signing Real Sociedad Midfielder Ander Guevara
Athletic’s unique player policy requires the club to keep a close eye on all possible transfer options, especially starlets at neighboring clubs. Throughout the decades the Lions have managed to sign important players from rivals, though it has become much more difficult in recent years. That being said, the club is always looking to improve the team and are said to have already identified a summer target.
According to reports in Gipuzkoa, via Ángel López of Mundo Deportivo, Athletic have been monitoring Real Sociedad midfielder Ander Guevara and are interested in signing the 22-year-old. Guevara, who was born in Vitoria, joined La Real’s academy in 2012 and made his first team debut five years later. This season injuries opened a path for a permanent role in Imanol Alguacil’s squad and Guevara has become a key player at Anoeta.
The report goes on to suggest that Athletic’s interest in Guevara is partially due to the team’s need to provide depth in the midfield, particularly behind Dani García. However, Unai Vencedor and Oihan Sancet are both expected to be promoted in the summer while Guevara’s €50 million release clause also makes a transfer highly unlikely.
Naturally, Real Sociedad will be unwilling to negotiate a transfer with Athletic and would demand the full release clause. Paying €50 million for the midfielder seems out of the question for Athletic unless the club truly believes he is worth the exorbitant fee. Even if the Zurigorri were willing to pay the clause, the player would still have to accept the offer to move to San Mamés. Ander Guevara is currently under contract through 2024 after signing a renewal with Real Sociedad over the summer.
