Athletic Club Open Renewal Talks With Unai Simón
Unai Simón has established himself as the starting goalkeeper at Athletic for the foreseeable future and has been one of Europe’s top players at the position this season. The 22-year-old has played at such a high level that clubs such as Real Madrid have reportedly shown interest, though Simón has no plans of leaving his boyhood club. “I will stay as long as Athletic will have me,” he told AS back in October and his passion for Athletic hasn’t changed.
When Kepa Arrizabalaga left for Chelsea in the summer of 2018 it could have spelled disaster for Athletic. Instead, it gave Simón the opportunity to make his debut with the first team and, over time, earn his place in the lineup. In April of last year the Lezama product penned an improved contract with Athletic through 2023 which raised his release clause to €50 million, but it may only be a matter of time before another deal is announced.
According to a report from Javier Ortiz de Lazcano of El Correo, Athletic recently contacted Simón’s representatives to start the process of renewing the goalkeeper’s contract and negotiations are underway. The club wants to avoid a situation like that of Arrizabalaga and hopes to significantly increase Simón’s wages and release clause to reflect his role in the team.
While it’s far too early for potential contract details, negotiations should be relatively simple and are sure to move quickly. Simón has already expressed on multiple occasions that he wants to continue his career at San Mamés. “The club has given me everything,” he recently told El Correo. “In a decade I would like to see myself where I am right now, at Athletic.” With a new deal on the way, Unai Simón is expected to pledge his future to Athletic.
