Rafa Alkorta “I Would Love A Basque Derby In The Cup Final”
Athletic have one foot in the Copa del Rey final following Wednesday night’s 1-0 win over Granada. There’s still work to be done in the second leg, but the Lions dream of lifting a 25th Cup title in April. If Gaizka Garitano’s side do manage to advance to the final they would either face Basque rivals Real Sociedad or Mirandés who are coached by Athletic legend Andoni Iraola.
“I would love a Basque derby in the Cup final, it would be very nice,” Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta told El Larguero. “For us especially, reaching the Cup final would be a reinforcement of our philosophy. La Gabarra is well guarded and I believe that there is still an important obstacle. It will not be an easy tie against Granada, they have at least the same goal that we do.”
Keeping a clean sheet in the first leg against Granada could be the key to advancing to the Cup final, but there are still 90 minutes of football left to play. Athletic will travel to Nuevo Estadio de Los Cármenes on 5 March with a trip to La Cartuja on the line.
