Yuri Berchiche And Raúl García Return To Training With An Eye On Granada
The upcoming Copa del Rey semifinal match against Granada will be the most important game of the season thus far for Athletic. Although this round of the Cup will be played over two legs, having the first match at home gives the Basques an opportunity to establish a lead to take back to Andalusia. Gaizka Garitano will field the strongest lineup possible, though there have been some doubts surrounding key players this week.
After missing Sunday’s Basque Derby due to injury both Yuri Berchiche and Raúl García missed training on Monday. Garitano even admitted after the trip to Anoeta that the two may not recover in time to be cleared for Wednesday’s Cup clash. Thankfully, that may not actually be the case.
Berchiche and Raúl García were both seen with the group at the start of training on Tuesday evening during the first 15 minutes which were open to the media. Their level of involvement is uncertain, but Juanma Velasco of Marca says that there is confidence that the pair will be available to play against Granada. Youth stars Oihan Sancet, Dani Vivian, and Unai Vencedor have also been training with the first team all week. In order to make the best decision, Garitano is giving the two as much time as possible to recover.
Normally, squad lists are announced the day before a match following training. Garitano didn’t provide the squad list after the session at Lezama and will instead make the announcement tomorrow before the match. The hope is that Yuri Berchiche and Raúl García will both be cleared to play without any threat of relapse.
