Basconia Striker Ruben Azcona Preparing To Make Return From Knee Surgery
This season was supposed to be a big one for Ruben Azcona. In his second year with Basconia the striker was expected to lead the attack for Patxi Salinas’ side and play a key role in the team’s success. The campaign started well with Azcona making his Bilbao Athletic debut in the opening match due to injuries, though the excitement was short-lived.
After returning to Basconia, Azcona soon earned a place in the starting lineup but failed to score goals and was eventually relegated to the bench. The 18-year-old made a total of 9 appearances, the last coming in a win over Tolosa in late November, before suffering a meniscus injury in his knee which required surgery. Having been sidelined for nearly three months Azcona is now working with trainers to make his return and could be cleared to play within the next few weeks, according to Javier Beltrán of El Correo.
Azcona has been one of the most promising young players to come out of Lezama in the last decade. Having broken the Cadete scoring record with 52 goals, the striker found the back of the net 38 times with Juvenil A before being promoted to Basconia. This season hasn’t gone the way that the starlet had planned, but the hope is that Azcona will be able to rediscover his best football once he returns from injury and continue his development.
Basconia have managed just fine without Azcona or, for that matter, a true striker. The team even enjoyed an eleven game unbeaten streak before losing to Vitoria over the weekend. However, the return of Ruben Azcona would add needed quality in attack and could be the key to a top four finish this season. Despite the disappointing campaign, Athletic have very high hopes for the teenager who is under contract through 2021.
