Raúl García And Yuri Berchiche In A Race For Fitness Ahead Of Cup Match
Athletic have already forgotten Sunday’s loss to Real Sociedad, it’s on to Granada. The Lions will host Diego Martínez’s side at San Mamés Wednesday night for the first leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals knowing that a positive result is mandatory. Athletic have the opportunity to build a lead at home before the away leg and preparations have already begun.
The team was back in training at Lezama on Monday where Unai Vencedor joined the group. Dani García will be suspended for this weekend’s league match against Granada, leading to the belief that Vencedor could be called up by the first thing. However, Athletic aren’t looking past Wednesday’s Cup match which will be treated like a final.
Gaizka Garitano is expected to start his strongest possible lineup, though there may be a problem. After missing the Basque Derby due to injuries, both Yuri Berchiche and Raúl García are doubtful to the Cup clash with Granada. While Berchiche worked separately from the team on Monday, Raúl García wasn’t even present at Lezama.
The availability of both players hinges on their level of participation in training on Tuesday. It’s become quite common for these two, along with others, to be given lighter work days in order to stay fresh, but with Garitano confirming their injuries this situation is different. For now, the pair are in a race for fitness and the club is hopeful that they will be cleared to play.
