Iker Muniain And Dani García Suspended For Next League Match Against Osasuna
Gaizka Garitano’s lineup to start the Basque Derby made it clear that Athletic are prioritizing the Copa del Rey above all else. While that is certainly the right choice, it doesn’t make Sunday’s loss to Real Sociedad any less painful. The defeat was disappointing but the match also came with other consequences.
Dani García came on late in the second half when the match was tied 1-1 in hopes of controlling the midfielder. Unfortunately, the 29-year-old committed a foul and was shown his fifth yellow card of the season. The accumulation means that García will miss next weekend’s league game against Osasuna at San Mamés and he won’t be the only one.
Tempers flared in the final moments of the game and Iker Muniain succumbed to the frustration. The captain made a late tackle on Mikel Oyarzabal and was rightfully shown a red card. Muniain had no intention of harming Oyarzabal and took a moment to apologize to the La Real captain, but the sending off could have significant repercussions.
Muniain will be unavailable for the Osasuna match due to suspension, but may also miss additional time. The Competition Committee will review the play to determine whether or not a longer suspension is deserved and, if the suspension is longer than three matches, he will also be unable to play in Wednesday’s Cup match against Granada. Normally, a situation like this warrants a two-game suspension but Iker Muniain must await a formal decision.
