Yuri Berchiche And Raúl García Will Miss Real Sociedad Derby With Injuries
Athletic’s impressive run to the Copa del Rey semifinals hasn’t come without consequences. Over the past month the Lions have played a total of 8 matches and still have a busy schedule ahead. Fatigue has become an issue with several players logging heavy minutes and some even picking up injuries.
During Saturday’s press conference, Gaizka Garitano confirmed that there were a number of issues in the squad that were being monitored closely. “Yuri (Berchiche) is injured, he has a groin strain, and we have doubts with several others,” said the manager. However, when the squad list for Sunday’s Basque Derby was announced Berchiche wasn’t the only big name absent.
Raúl García was also left out of the squad with many believing that it was a coaching decision to give the 33-year-old some much-needed rest. However, it has since been confirmed by Robert Basic of El Correo that Raúl García is dealing with an overload of a hip muscle.
With Berchiche and Raúl García both unavailable for tomorrow’s Derby others will have to step up in their place. Iñigo Martinez’s suspension adds even more difficulty to the situation, though the concern at this point is whether or not the injured players will be cleared in time for Wednesday’s Cup match against Granada at San Mamés.
