The future of Unai Núñez is still uncertain despite his decision to reject offers to leave Athletic in January. Over the past year the defender has grown frustrated with his lack of minutes, but the situation has improved with Gaizka Garitano’s move to three center-back formation. Núñez has started to see the field on a regular basis but will still have a difficult decision to make in the summer.

While Núñez’s contract doesn’t expire until 2023, the player’s mediocre €30 million release clause makes him a relatively inexpensive option for clubs across Europe. Athletic have put a renewal offer on the table, though Núñez has yet to sign. The offer, which is said to come with a significantly higher release clause and wages close to that of Yeray, hasn’t convinced the 23-year-old who wants to earn around the same as Iñigo Martinez if his clause is going to be increased to the level the club desires.

A lot can change in the months ahead, but for now there is a very real possibility that Núñez will leave the club in the summer according to a report from Sergio Santos Chozas of AS. Clubs like Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona, and Inter Milan have all expressed interest in signing the defender while his recent performances have also caught the eye of Pep Guardiola.

Manchester City will be in the market for defenders at the end of the season and have already benefitted from the signing of Aymeric Laporte just a few years ago. Núñez’s excellent showing last night in the win over Barcelona once again proved his quality and clubs are paying close attention to his situation at Athletic. The Lezama product will have several offers when the summer transfer window opens.

Athletic’s hopes of retaining Núñez revolve around the team’s goal of qualifying for Europe. Unai Núñez has already expressed that he wants to continue playing for his boyhood club, but he also wants consistent minutes. If that won’t happen at Athletic he will entertain the idea of leaving. Playing in Europe next season would guarantee minutes for the defender and is likely the key to convincing Núñez to sign a new deal.
