Iñaki Williams “This Is Our Chance To Take Out The Barge”

Inaki Williams Celebrate Barcelona Copa

Iñaki Williams was the hero on Thursday night, scoring a 93rd minute header to lift Athletic to a 1-0 win over Barcelona. The victory at San Mamés sent the Lions through to the Copa del Rey semifinals and will go down as one of the most historic matches of this generation. As fans and players celebrated the result after the match, Williams was speechless.

“I don’t even have the words, sometimes you have to have faith,” the striker told reporters. “We knew it was going to be complicated and we were alive for the whole 90 minutes. Finishing the game this was is reward for the effort we’ve made all season.”

The 25-year-old has now scored four goals in the Copa del Rey, but isn’t interested in individual praise. “This success is the result of the whole team’s work, of all the fans who have encouraged which has been indescribable tonight,” he said with a grin. “This is our moment and hopefully we’ll get the dream we all want. We must enjoy the moment, although tomorrow we have to prepare for the next match.”

Athletic will find out their opponent for the next round during Friday’s draw with Real Sociedad, Granada, and Mirandés the possible rivals. There is still work to do, but the Zurigorri are dreaming of lifting a 25th Cup title. “No one could have imagined that these four teams would be in the semifinal,” Williams admitted. “We don’t care who we draw, we want to be in the final. This is our chance to take out the Barge if we do things right. We’re getting closer and closer.”

Unlike previous rounds, the semifinal will take place over two legs to decide which teams will meet in the final at Estadio de la Cartuja. There’s reason to celebrate in Bilbao tonight, but tomorrow the team must quickly turn their attention to Sunday’s trip to Real Sociedad.
