Yeray “Barcelona Are The Ones Who Should Be Afraid”
Athletic will host Barcelona at San Mamés on Thursday with hopes of winning to advance to the Copa del Rey semifinals. Eliminating the Catalans will be a massive undertaking, but this Athletic side has no fear. The Lions beat Barcelona 1-0 in the opening game of the La Liga season and defender Yeray is fully confident that they can do it again.
“Barcelona are the ones who should be afraid because they are coming to us, to San Mamés, and they will find more than 50,000 lions fighting against them,” Yeray told El Larguero. “So they have to be afraid. Playing at San Mamés has given us many points. We are going to go with everything. The fans will be super involved because all of the tickets have been sold.”
The new Cup format means that Athletic will only play one match against Barcelona with the winner moving on in the tournament. There have been many surprises in the competition already and the Basques believe they have what it takes to challenge for a 25th Copa del Rey title.
“This year, because of how the qualifiers have gone and the new format, we have already talked about taking out the barge and hopefully it will happen. After how the last match went against Getafe we are looking forward to winning a game. We have gone many games, I think seven but I don’t know, without winning and we want to win, especially at the Cathedral.”
In closing, Yeray was asked about the current drama surrounding Barcelona and agreed that it works in Athletic’s favor. “If Messi doesn’t want to come play the Cup that wouldn’t bother us,” he said jokingly. “All the mess or drama that Barcelona have is good for us and, the more they have, the better. I don’t want it for anyone but in the end it suits us well.” Athletic haven’t lost to Barcelona since Gaizka Garitano took over as manager and the Zurigorri hope to continue that streak tomorrow.
