Ander Capa And Yuri Berchiche Uncertain For Barcelona Match

Yuri Berchiche Training

Yuri Berchiche and Ander Capa have missed training this week (AC)

Athletic’s Copa del Rey match against Barcelona on Thursday will be one of the biggest games of the season. The Lions must win at San Mamés to advance to the semifinals of the tournament, but eliminating Barcelona will be a serious challenge. Gaizka Garitano is expected to field the strongest lineup possible, though the manager could be without a couple of key player.

Both Ander Capa and Yuri Berchiche are in doubt for the Cup match after missing training this week. Capa, who didn’t start against Getafe due to discomfort, was absent from Monday’s session and worked separately from the group the following day. Berchiche, on the other hand, underwent a recovery session on Monday alongside Iñigo Martinez indoors but wasn’t seen at Lezama on Tuesday.

For now, the status for both players is uncertain. It’s very likely that Berchiche has simply not trained out of precaution which has been a regular practice since he dislocated his shoulder earlier in the season. Capa is a bigger question although the fact that the club hasn’t released a medical report is a promising sign.

Being without either fullback would be a blow for Athletic as Berchiche and Capa have been among the best players in Europe at their positions this season. Mikel Balenziaga and Iñigo Lekue would be expected to take their places in the lineup if necessary. Neither player has been officially ruled out for Thursday’s Cup clash at this point and their availability for the match will be determined during Wednesday’s training session.
