Yeray “The Blame Is On Us”

Yeray Getafe

Yeray explained that Athletic were unable to play their football against Getafe (AC)

After five straight draws in league play Athletic were determined to take all three points in Sunday’s match against Getafe. “We’ve had too many draws in a row,” Yeray said before the game. The defender was confident that Athletic could win at San Mamés and take a major step forward in the race for Europe. However, the Basques were outplayed by Getafe and suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat.

“It’s a hard loss,” Yeray said after the match. “We have to reconsider some things and think about our failures because it wasn’t a good game. Once they go ahead they play very little football. In the first half there was, I don’t know, only 19 minutes of actual football.”

The defender explained that Getafe prevented Athletic from doing much with possession.  Although the Lions knew what to expect, they were unable to impose their style of football.

“Our idea was to play outside which is practically the only place where Getafe leave the space, but virtually no football could be played. We knew that was going to happen and things didn’t go our way. They know very well how they want to play and they do it perfectly. The blame is on us because we couldn’t get what we wanted.”

Following Sunday’s loss at home, Athletic will travel to Real Sociedad next weekend with another important three points on the line. However, the Zurigorri must first prepare for Thursday’s Copa del Rey match against Barcelona with the winner advancing to the Cup semifinals.
