Iñigo Martinez Suspended For Basque Derby Against Real Sociedad

Inigo Martinez Getafe

Iñigo Martinez will miss next weekend’s Basque Derby (AC)

The loss to Getafe at San Mamés on Sunday was an utter disappointment for Athletic. Not only was the team’s winless streak extended to seven straight league games, but Iñigo Martinez picked up an unnecessary yellow card late in the second half. It was the defender’s fifth booking of the La Liga season which will now result in a one-game suspension.

Martinez will still be available for Thursday’s Copa del Rey match against Barcelona, but will miss next Sunday’s Basque Derby. The center-back, who has arguably been the best defender in La Liga this season, will unfortunately be unable to travel to Anoeta to face his former club Real Sociedad.

With Martinez set to miss the Derby, Unai Núñez will be expected to take his place alongside Yeray. Athletic currently trail Real Sociedad in the table by three points and will need a victory next weekend to avoid dropping even further out of the race for Europe. The Zurigorri won the first meeting 2-0 earlier this season at San Mamés.
