Gaizka Garitano “I’m The One Most Responsible For The Results”
Athletic’s winless streak in La Liga was extended to seven games on Sunday as the Lions fell 2-0 to Getafe at San Mamés. In what was a very disappointing result, the Lions struggled to create chances and were outplayed by Getafe. Gaizka Garitano explained after the game that conceding the first goal all but decided the outcome and that Athletic were unable to recover.
“We were very uncomfortable, the first goal hurt us a lot. When they go ahead on the scoreboard they are a very good team because it’s impossible to create chances unless they make mistakes. We lacked freshness and lost a lot of balls. They beat us fairly. I’m the one most responsible for the results. When you have several draws in a row you have to win and not lose. I’m worried, how could I not be.”
Garitano went on to discuss Athletic’s struggles in front of goal, sharing that Getafe made it impossible to create any real chances. The manager also explained why he fielded a 4-2-3-1 formation after having success with three defenders in recent weeks.
“We were able to win many duels but it wasn’t easy to create clear chances. In the end, it was a very physical match and we ended the game tired. We tried, especially when it was 1-0, but it’s very hard when they go ahead on the scoreboard. The last home game we played with a back four. It’s my responsibility. We have always been comfortable at San Mamés with four defenders.”
Athletic must now turn their attention to Thursday’s Copa del Rey match against Barcelona where the winner will advance to the semifinals. “I give more importance to league games than the Cup because today’s result is sure to be more influential than the one on Thursday,” said Garitano. “We can’t afford to be in a sad mood because we are a team that is hard to beat and we have another important game coming up.”
Aritz Aduriz could be named to the starting lineup against Barcelona after making his return from a hip injury in the loss to Getafe. “I’ve seen Aduriz well, he’s ready to play more,” Garitano said. On the other hand, Iñigo Martinez will miss next weekend’s trip to Real Sociedad due to suspension because of Sunday’s yellow card. “Iñigo’s booking isn’t surprising in a game with so many duels and challenges.”
Despite the string of poor results Athletic only trail the top seven by three points. A win against Real Sociedad next Sunday could lift the Lions into Europe, but first Athletic will have to contend with Barcelona in the Copa del Rey.
