Aritz Aduriz “We Won’t Make Any Excuses”
Aritz Aduriz made his return to the field on Sunday after being sidelined for nearly three months with a hip injury, but it wasn’t a day for celebration. Athletic were defeated 2-0 by Getafe at San Mamés and are now in danger of falling out of the race for Europe. Aduriz admitted that the Lions struggled to create chances and were outplayed by the Azulones.
“Getafe played an extremely strong game and we weren’t able to counter it,” the striker told Movistar after the game. “They were superior so there’s not much to say. We didn’t live up to the situation. They know very well how they want to play and they do it well.”
Despite having a very busy schedule over the last month, Aduriz refused to say that fatigue has been an issue for the team. Sunday’s result was certainly disappointing but the Basques must quickly turn their attention to the Copa del Rey.
“We won’t make any excuses. We always fight until the end, sometimes we fail but we never give up. We have fought today, but it wasn’t meant to be. We didn’t have enough depth and needed to be more incisive around the area. We had too much possession on our side of the field. We weren’t good and they played a great game. It’s important to forget this loss as soon as possible and turn the page because Thursday’s match against Barcelona will be a special challenge.”
Athletic will host Barcelona at San Mamés with the winner advancing to the Copa del Rey semifinals. The Zurigorri have been taking the tournament very seriously with confidence that they can reach the final. Eliminating Barcelona will be difficult but Athletic aren’t backing down from the challenge.
