Athletic’s run to the Copa del Rey quarterfinals has been full of drama and excitement. After relatively simple wins over Intercity and Sestao River, the Basques were forced to survive penalty shootouts against Elche and Tenerife to advance. It feels as though fate has destined Athletic to eventually reach the final and challenge for a 25th Cup title, but the next round will be far more difficult.

On Friday, Athletic were drawn against Barcelona for the quarterfinals with the game taking place at San Mamés next week. Athletic haven’t had much success against the Catalans in Cup action, but did win 2-1 the last time Barcelona visited the Cathedral three years ago. With the new format making this a single elimination game, the Zurigorri will treat this match as a final in front of their own fans.

Barcelona earned their place in the quarterfinals with wins over Ibiza and Leganés and will now travel to the ever daunting San Mamés. While Barcelona will be favorites to win and advance, the Basques will like their chances at home with an opportunity to reach the semifinals. Athletic and Barcelona have won the Copa del Rey title more than any other clubs, but only one can move on.
