Iago Herrerín Apologizes For Red Card Against Tenerife

Iago Herrerín has gone from hero to villain in a matter of days. After leading Athletic to a penalty shootout win over a Elche last week, the goalkeeper was hoping for another great performance in the following Cup match against Tenerife last night. Instead, Herrerín was shown a red card just two minutes into the game which left the team in a precarious situation.

Athletic would concede three goals, including two penalties, but never gave up hope. The Lions managed to equalize on three separate occasions and, following a sensational Yuri Berchiche strike in extra time, sent the match to penalties. Herrerín’s replacement Jokin Ezkieta, who was making his first team debut, saved one shot as Athletic won the shootout 4-2 to advance to the quarterfinals.

Herrerín has been the target of constant abuse from fans over the past few years and the sending off on Tuesday night will certainly bring more criticism. The 32-year-old took to social media after the game where he apologized for the red card and thanked his teammates for overcoming his mistake to win the game.

“It’s a very hard day personally. After a serious mistake of mine we almost went out of this competition. I can only ask my teammates for forgiveness and especially thank them because I would go to the end of the world with them. I repeat that on days of failure, head up, take a walk and ask for forgiveness. Aupa Athletic Always! Thanks for the messages of support and for always being there in the good and bad, and especially congratulations to Jokin Ezkieta!”

With Herrerín suspended for the next round of the Cup Unai Simón will start with Jokin Ezkieta once again featuring as the backup goalkeeper on the bench. Theoretically, Iago Herrerín would return to the lineup if Athletic manage to advance to the semifinals with hopes of challenging for the Copa del Rey title.
