Cristian Ganea’s move to Athletic has been challenging. When first signed, the Romanian was expected to challenge for a starting role in the team but made just two appearances in his first season before leaving on loan in January. Over the summer Ganea was determined to earn his place in the team and turned down other offers. However, the left-back was unable to convince Gaizka Garitano.

So far this season Ganea hasn’t been included in the squad a single time and it quickly became clear that he wasn’t a part of the manager’s plans. The 27-year-old would need to leave on loan in order to enjoy minutes and the January transfer window provided that opportunity. On Friday, Athletic announced that Ganea would be returning to Viitorul for the remainder of the season.

“There were offers from other counties but Viitorul is my home and I feel better here,” Ganea said during Monday’s press conference. “These five months will be beneficial for me. It was a difficult time for me in Bilbao. I was comfortable in the locker room, but I didn’t play so I’ve returned to Romania to play.”

Ganea joined his new teammates in training on Monday and is expected to play an important role at Viitorul who currently sit 9 points off the top of the table. If you aren’t playing you don’t feel good,” he admitted. “First, I want to do a good job at Viitorul, get into the top six, and then we’ll see. I haven’t proposed anything. My goal is to play as many games as possible and return to the National Team. I want to work hard every day in training and play to be the best.”

There has been speculation that Ganea’s return to Viitorul could become permanent in the summer, but a purchase option wasn’t included in the loan deal. Athletic will analyze the defender’s performances while away before making any decisions about the future. Cristian Ganea has shown potential during friendlies over the past two years and hopes to prove himself over the remainder of the season.
