Bilbao Athletic Midfielder Iñigo Baqué Suffers Torn ACL
Iñigo Baqué has been, without question, one of the most important players for Bilbao Athletic this season. With strikers Andoni Tascón and Ewan Urain unavailable for the majority of the campaign due to injuries, manager Joseba Etxeberria turned to Baqué to lead the attack. Having spent his entire career as a center-back and defensive midfielder, the 23-year-old was new to the role but quickly became a crucial part of the team’s success.
The move may have been surprising but Baqué performed well as the center-forward, scoring three goals and holding up play to help create chances for others. Baqué also contributed heavily when the team pressed and provided impressive work rate in all areas. Eventually, the arrival of Gorka Guruzeta allowed Baqué to return to the midfield while also functioning as the backup striker.
Baqué has been an invaluable asset for Etxeberria, but will unfortunately miss the remainder of the season. Athletic announced on Monday that the 23-year-old has suffered a torn ACL in his left knee and will be undergoing a consultation in the coming days before undergoing surgery.
This is the second time Baqué has suffered a torn ACL. The first injury came back in September of 2018 and involved the midfielder’s right knee. Iñigo Baqué was able to make a full recovery and will once again face several months of rehabilitation with the goal of returning to the field quickly and stronger than before.
