Unai Simón Back In Training After Recovering From Illness
Athletic’s intense schedule over the past few weeks was further complicated when an outbreak of the flu struck the squad. A number of players were forced to miss time and Unai Simón suffered more than anyone after being diagnosed with mumps. The goalkeeper was forced to stay home while recovering but is finally ready to take the field again.
Simón missed league matches against Celta Vigo and Espanyol, as well as Cup fixtures against Sestao River and Elche, but was cleared to return to training on Sunday and worked normally with his teammates at Lezama. Having recovered from the illness, Simón is now available to Gaizka Garitano but will likely be kept out of Tuesday’s trip to Tenerife out of precaution.
Depending on the goalkeeper’s level of fitness Simón could return to the starting lineup on Sunday when Athletic host Getafe at San Mamés. Iago Herrerín has played well while filling in, though having Unai Simón back in the team will give Athletic a significant boost going into a stretch of important fixtures.
