Basconia Extend Unbeaten Streak To 10 Games With Impressive 2-0 Win Over Portugalete
It took some time for Basconia to find their footing under new manage Patxi Salinas but the team is firing on all cylinders now. Over the first few months of the season the Basauritarras were wading the mid-table waters and have since soared to the top of the standings with exceptional performances and confidence.
Basconia had gone nine games without defeat heading into Sunday’s clash with Portugalete. Extending the streak would be a massive test with Portugalete one of the strongest teams in the group and Basconia missing key players Julen Agirrezabala, Álvaro Núñez, Youssouf Diarra, Jon Cabo, Aitor Paredes, and Beñat Prados. Despite the difficulty, the team was up for the challenge.
The two sides traded possession to open the match but Basconia took control in the 31st minute when Josu Juste opened up the scoring by taking advantage of a mistake at the back. Midfielder Gorka Estrada would double the lead just before halftime and Portugalete had no response following the break. Basconia’s defense held strong to help lead the team to a 2-0 win at one of the most daunting fields in the league.
Sunday’s win lifted Basconia to 4th in the table with 37 points, just five off of Portugalete who hold the next spot. Patxi Salinas’s side will have the opportunity to improve their unbeaten streak next weekend when Santutxu visits Basauri for another important fixture.
