Athletic Condemns Violence Amongst Fans Before Espanyol Match
Athletic’s 1-1 draw against Espanyol on Saturday was a disappointing result, but it wasn’t the only unfortunate thing that happened at RCDE Stadium. The tone was set before the match even began when videos surfaced of some Athletic and Espanyol fans fighting outside the stadium. Then, late in the second half, Iñaki Williams was subjected to racial abuse as he left the field.
The club quickly showed support for Williams on social media, as did Espanyol who announced they would be performing their own internal investigation of the incident. Athletic then addressed the violence outside of the stadium with the following official press release, condemning what took place in the streets of Cornellà.
Athletic Club rejects and expressly and strongly condemns any expression, manifestation, or violent act.
