Asier Villalibre “I’m Happy To Have Scored My First Goal But We Wanted A Victory”
Asier Villalibre made the most of his opportunity on Saturday as the young striker was named to the starting lineup against Espanyol. It would take just 11 minutes for Villalibre to open the scoring through a wonderfully worked corner kick, the first league goal of his career. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to lift Athletic to victory with Espanyol finding an equalizer before the final whistle.
“We rehearsed the play yesterday,” Villalibre confirmed when speaking to Athletic TV after the match. “In training I got the wrong shot and today I was lucky that it went well.” The 22-year-old was excited to score the goal but coming away with only one point was disappointing.
“It’s always important to play and I try to do my best, but I’m left with a bittersweet taste. I’m happy to have scored my first goal, but we wanted a victory and to add three points. We had many chances and we didn’t finish them well. We lacked the goal to kill the game and we paid for it because they took advantage of their opportunity.”
Asier Villalibre’s impressive performances over the past few weeks suggest that the Lezama product deserves more minutes moving forward. Next weekend’s match against Getafe could be yet another opportunity for the striker to make an impact, but Athletic must first turn their attention to Tuesday’s Copa del Rey trip to Tenerife.
