Cristian Ganea Returns To Viitorul Constanta On Loan
Cristian Ganea’s move to Athletic hasn’t gone as well as the Romanian had hoped. After signing with the Basque giants from Viitorul Constanta in January of 2018, Ganea finished the season in Romania before officially joining Athletic in the summer. At the time of the transfer agreement Ganea was expected to challenge Mikel Balenziaga for minutes, but the arrival of Yuri Berchiche created an entirely different situation.
In his first season with Athletic, Ganea made just two appearances and was not part of Eduardo Berizzo or Gaizka Garitano’s plans. The left-back would leave for Numancia on loan in January where he enjoyed success in the second division before returning to San Mamés determined to earn a place in the team.
Unfortunately, Ganea has been unable to convince Garitano this season and has only featured in friendlies while not even being called up for a league or cup match. The manager recently revealed that the club was working to send Ganea on loan again to give the 27-year-old regular minutes and a move have finally materialized.
Athletic officially announced on Friday that a principle agreement has been reached with Viitorul Constanta for Ganea to return to Romania on loan for the remainder of the season. Despite reported interest from clubs in Spain’s second division, a formal offer was never made which opened the door for other options. Cristian Ganea played his best football in his home country and will now have the opportunity to enjoy consistency and rediscover his best form.
